Lakhimi Borooah and how it all began

Keen to popularize chess amongst the children in Assam, Late Lakhimi Borooah started a children’s chess tournament in Assam in 1988 under the P.C. Borooah Educational & Charitable Society. She also revived the then defunct Guwahati Chess Association the same year and continued as president of the association till 1993.

She founded the PC Borooah Children’s Chess Meet in 1989 and a grand ceremony commemorated 25 years of the meet in 2014. The first Fide rated players from Assam, Chingkhei Singh and many other good players are the products of this meet.

In 2000, the first northeast level P.C. Borooah children’s chess meet was held. Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony. On his advice, Late Lakhimi Borooah started the P.C. Borooah Chess Academy in 2001.

The academy has produced many state, national and international level chess players and has played a pivotal role in the development of chess in Assam.

Late Lakhimi Borooah was a keen social worker and she was associated with several organizations like the Indian Women & Child Welfare Trust, Eastern India Recreation Club, Assam Shishu Kalyan Sadan, New Art Players and others.

She was the first Assamese woman to represent India through the Tea Board in the World Trade Fair in 1964 in New York.
